Five Stories Build One Jamaican Community
The first five novels take readers from Jamaican community life to the experiences of Jamaicans living in Brooklyn. Each story can be read independently, while recurring characters and connected experiences gradually create a broader portrait of Gully Side.
‘Gully Side: A Big Yard, A So It Guh?’ follows a family discovering how difficult privacy can become when living in a close community. ‘One Don: Mi Nuh Business’ examines Damion’s journey toward becoming a powerful community Don and the influence of politics, money, loyalty, and responsibility.
‘Hot Wuk: Who Feel It Knows It’ centers on Poochie as she faces motherhood, judgment, relationships, and personal ambition. ‘Bun Gad: Whose God?’ explores faith, religious authority, morality, and responsibility when community secrets emerge. ‘Farrin Life, Farrin Lies: Tek Time’ moves to Brooklyn, examining migration, work, cultural identity, financial pressures, family relationships, and the realities of building a life abroad.
Stories Shaped by Jamaican Culture and Social Experience
The series draws upon subjects familiar across Jamaican music, comedy, popular culture, and everyday conversation. TanYah Global uses fiction to examine the people and circumstances behind those subjects, bringing together humor, gossip, intimacy, conflict, difficult choices, and social observation. Her nearly thirty years of experience working with young people, families, and communities has helped her craft the stories. The novels explore how individuals respond to poverty, ambition, relationships, authority, social expectations, migration, and the desire to belong.
“You don’t have to be Jamaican to recognise somebody in the yard,” said TanYah Global, author of ‘The Gully Side Book Series.’ “These books make room for their humour, tenderness, ambition, and difficult choices.”
Part Two arrives in February 2027 with five additional interconnected novels: ‘SQUADY,’ ‘Jerry the Hyper G,’ ‘Night Nurse,’ ‘Rum Bar,’ and ‘Last Stop.’ Together, the two parts form a ten-book collection centered on one evolving community and the lives within it.
